The Specialty Hospital of Washington focuses on long-term intensive medical care and is licensed as a Long Term Acute Care Specialty Hospital (LTACH). Although the concept of Long-term Acute Care has been in existence throughout the nation for several years, The Specialty Hospital of Washington was the first of this type to be established in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area.

The Hospital was established in the District of Columbia in
July, 1995 and was purchased in 2005 by Specialty Hospitals of America - located out of Portsmouth, NH. Its mission is to provide a comprehensive, high quality alternative to long term stays in the Intensive Care or Critical Care units of Short-term acute care hospitals.

SHW is a full service hospital with 24 hour In-House Physician, Nursing and Respiratory Therapy coverage. Our Chief Medical Officer is available onsite on a full-time basis. An additional unique benefit of our facility is that ALL of the rooms in our Hospital and Nursing Center are PRIVATE ROOMS which help to maximize the healing process.
