Types of Patients We Serve

The Specialty Hospital of Washington serves adult patients who still require close monitoring, observation and who require a high level of care including invasive forms of assessment, management, monitoring, and therapy longer than the traditional Short-Term Acute Care Hospital lengths of stay (traditionally, an average of 25 days – although this may vary specific to the patient). Conditions for which admission to The Specialty Hospital of Washington should be considered include:
  • Ventilated Patients—Possibility/Probability of weaning - underlying disease process may vary
  • Trauma—Critical stabilization completed but requiring continued acute care (orthopedic, tongs, Halo)
  • Extensive wound care—
    - Infected/complicated wounds
    - Wound Vacuum Assisted Closure (VAC)
    - Less extensive wounds but with additional medical needs requiring active treatment
    - Diabetic/vascular stasis ulcers
    - Post surgical fistulas
    - Dehiscence (failed wound closure) requiring open healing
    - Post flap surgery (3 or greater days Post op)
  • Transplant patients (Patients awaiting transplants but too sick to be managed at lower level of care)
  • Osteomylitis (bone infection) on IV antibiotics
  • Bactremia (bacterial blood infection)
  • Neutropenia (low white blood cell count) requiring special nutritional monitoring and buildup in preparation for chemotherapy
