Press Releases

WASHINGTON, D.C. – (April 3, 2006)

The Specialty Hospital of Washington (SHW) is proud to announce the appointment of Gene L. Colice, MD, as its new Director of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.

The arrival of Dr. Colice is “a strong step forward in improving the outcomes of our patients and bolsters the concept of implementing a Focused Center of Medical Excellence in the pulmonary medicine arena” states Eric Rieseberg, Chairman and CEO
of The Specialty Hospital of Washington.

Dr. Colice has an impressive medical background and holds Board Certification not only in Pulmonary Medicine, but also in Critical Care and Internal Medicine. In addition to his new role at SHW, Dr. Colice also serves as the Medical Director of Critical Care and ICU at Washington Hospital Center. Dr. Colice attended Medical School at New York University and completed his Residency at Bellevue Hospital Center, N.Y.

“We are so fortunate to have a physician with the expertise, training, and stature of Dr. Colice to lead our Pulmonary and Critical Care service lines here at SHW. He brings both a regional and national reputation as an acclaimed teacher and practitioner in developing first class programs resulting in outstanding patient care,” says Dr. Manisha Singal, Medical Director and Vice President of Medical Affairs.

Since its change in ownership in late 2005, the facility has made a variety of improvements to enhance equipment quality and expand patient services. Some of these improvements include the purchase of state-of-the-art ventilator equipment, at a cost of approximately one million dollars. This new equipment will fuel the expansion of the hospital’s leading acute respiratory program and the planned opening of the District’s only Chronic Ventilator Care Program in SHW’s Nursing Center in the next few weeks.

SHW, the premier long-term acute care hospital in Washington, DC, specializes in caring for patients with highly acute medically complex conditions, such as cardiopulmonary illnesses, severe wounds, kidney disease or multiple medical conditions.

The Specialty Hospital of Washington is located at 700 Constitution Ave. NE, and is owned and operated by Specialty Hospitals of America, LLC, a health care management corporation based in Portsmouth, N.H.
