Press Releases

WASHINGTON, D.C. – (June 1, 2006)

Specialty Hospitals of America, LLC, (SHA) a health care management corporation based in Portsmouth, N.H., announced an agreement with Doctors Community Healthcare Corporation to purchase Hadley Memorial Hospital, a long term acute care hospital and skilled nursing facility located in Washington, DC. Hadley Memorial Hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and was recognized by US News and World Report in its “2005 -Best Hospitals” issue for care in the Washington, D.C, Maryland and Virginia region.

The purchase of Hadley marks SHA’s second acquisition in one year and establishes the young company’s position in the emerging field of long term acute care. The combined operation of Hadley and SHA’s other local facility, Specialty Hospital of Washington, on Capitol Hill, will make SHA the largest provider of LTACH services in Washington, D.C., with revenues approaching $100 million annually.
“The acquisition of Hadley Memorial Hospital and proposed close working relationship between Hadley and The Specialty Hospital of Washington will enhance our ability to meet the needs of the Mid-Atlantic area, and more importantly, the long term critical care needs of the patients of Washington, D.C.” says Eric F. Rieseberg, Chairman of The Specialty Hospital of Washington and President of Specialty Hospitals of America, LLC.

Commenting on this pending merger, Susan Bailey, CEO of The Specialty Hospital of Washington said, “Working in concert with Hadley Memorial Hospital, we will be better able to serve our patients, the acute care hospitals that send patients to us, and at the same time we will be able to improve our staff development opportunities and operational efficiencies. This will represent a dramatic improvement to the overall healthcare delivery system for our city and citizens in our surrounding states who rely on D.C. hospitals for high acuity health care.”

Founded in 2002 with the mission to fulfill a growing need for longer term (average stay of 25 days) patients with highly acute, medically complex conditions, SHA is committed to a health care paradigm called Focused Centers of Medical Excellence (FCME) in which hospitals focus on highly specific disciplines in which they excel in both patient outcomes and as a business model. Current programs of medical excellence being delivered at the two hospitals include cardiopulmonary/ventilator care, wound care and medically complex patient management. LTACH facilities receive patients who are discharged from acute care hospitals and surgical centers when they have a need for on-going high level care. “We target our services to serve our local short-term acute care hospitals, because when we provide best possible outcomes from the patients they discharge to our hospitals, it allows the acute care hospitals to provide more and better services to their communities, and the patient receives the best, most specific care possible,” said Rieseberg.

Specialty Hospitals of America manages, operates and develops high acuity long and short term acute care hospitals and nursing facilities. Recently founded, the company's vision is to provide Focused Centers of Medical Excellence in its managed and owned hospitals and nursing facilities.
